New Post

A chairde,

Several of our fellow members have been threatened with indiscriminate mass evictions in their building, courtesy of landlord Wellington Hospitality Ltd.

While some of the tenants in this building have lived there for as long as 14 years, the landlord has disgracefully issued all of them with a mere 3 month notice period - as well as a threat to cut off essential services such as gas and electricity after this point.

The loophole they’re trying to exploit here is that the tenants are “hotel guests” - an obviously ridiculous assertion. CATU Rathmines-Ranelagh has been coordinating a response, including a phone and email picket which took place yesterday.

The next step is a demonstration and signature gathering for a petition which will take place tomorrow (Saturday) outside Swan Leisure Centre in Rathmines at 14:00. The demands being set out are (1) the withdrawal of eviction threats and (2) all tenants being provided with proper contracts and to be registered with the RTB, as should always have been the case.

The meeting is part of the “Stand Against Eviction and Homelessness” campaign and acts as a precursor to an anti-eviction march which takes place later this month, on Friday, November 22nd.

Please join if you can and if you’d be interested in helping out with getting the word out on these events locally, please contact [email protected]

Following the union’s national campaigns meeting last Saturday, the new national campaigns steering committee has been formed with reps from all four provinces. Committee reps will be reaching out to local branches in the coming weeks to touch base and see what branches are up to in their organising around our two national campaigns – The Union In First and Public Housing. If at any point you're looking to link in with your rep feel free to email [email protected].

CATU Ballymun-Finglas will host a recruitment planning meeting next Tuesday at 19:30 in the Axis in Ballymun.

The meeting will focus on setting out a plan to connect with the local community and drive membership growth - from potential campaigns and areas of focus to the locations we need to be more active in (including a drive to have more of a presence in Finglas, as much of the organising to date has been restricted to Ballymun).

All welcome to join!
