Events Galore - Starting TONIGHT

A chara,

There’s a whole host of training and other activities coming up in the very near future - starting with a recruitment training evening TONIGHT for members and branches in the Dublin area. It takes place at 6PM in the Macro Centre, just off North King Street, and will provide members with the opportunity to get to know one another and develop skills around recruiting new members whether through doorknocking, stalls or over the phone.

At the conclusion of the training there will also be a chance to join the Mountjoy-Dorset branch in some doorknocking in the local area, with a particular focus on a large vulture landlord who’s currently involved in several attempted evictions around the city.

The Maps pin for the exact location of tonight’s training can be accessed HERE.

CATU Cork will be running a Community Organising training event this coming Saturday at the IWU Offices on 55 North Main Street in Cork.

There will be training on the basics of our union and how you can get more involved to help strengthen and build our community one person at a time. You can register for attendance at the event HERE and a Maps pin for the meeting location can be accessed HERE

Also this Saturday, CATU Midlands will be running an event of their own in Westmeath. In a similar format to the Dublin and Cork events, this will be an opportunity to learn more about the union, talk to potential members and take collective action.

The location for this one is Venue 4, 4 Bastion St, Athlone and you can find a Maps pin for it HERE.

The Culture Night walking tour we’ve mentioned previously, facilitated by Financial Justice Ireland, is taking place tomorrow evening. It kicks off at 5pm from the James Connolly statue on Beresford Place in Dublin 1 (Maps pin HERE)

CATU will be involved in speaking at some of the stops along the route, which takes in much of the financial services area (IFSC).

The theme of the tour is ‘Place, Politics and Power’ and registration is required to attend. You can register HERE.

CATU Waterford will be protesting against the involvement of the Gardaí in the recent unlawful eviction that left two of our fellow members homeless.

Join from 1pm this coming Sunday at Ballybricken Garda Station, Waterford City. Maps pin HERE.

Attendees will hear directly from affected tenants and the next actions for the campaign.

Share the Facebook event here, the Twitter event here and the Instagram event here.

Join CATU Fingal and Applewood residents, who are facing eviction from their homes in the area, on September 28th at 1.30pm outside LRC RE-1's offices. We will be hand-delivering a copy of a letter sent earlier this month - a letter which they have so far failed to acknowledge.

The meeting place is 32 Baggot Street Lower, Dublin 2. Maps pin here.

Lastly for now, huge kudos to CATU Derry and their member, who managed to retrieve a withheld deposit.

Some initial research conducted by the branch found that (a) the deposit was not in a Deposit Protection Scheme (a legal requirement in the North of Ireland), (b) the landlord only gave our member a 4 week notice period, rather than the statutory 8 weeks and (c) the landlord was not registered

This information obviously caused Mr. Landlord enough of a panic that further escalation wasn’t necessary and the deposit was promptly returned!

Tune in next week for details of our Leinster Recruitment Day AND the 2023 Campaigns launch ❤️
