CATU News - Week 45

A chairde,
There will be various Palestinian solidarity actions taking place again over the weekend. CATU members have turned out in great numbers so far, let’s keep it up.
Tomorrow (Friday) there will be a candlelit vigil taking place at 6pm at Erskine House in Belfast, while there will be a rally and march at the Spire on Dublin’s O’Connell Street on Saturday at 1pm.
Further events across the island are yet to be announced, but as always, keep in touch with the IPSC for updates.

The union will be running a Public Housing & Organising Training on Saturday, November 25th in Liberty Hall in Dublin.
The agenda will include:
Evaluating previous public housing organising projects: What worked/didn’t work
A workshop on community organising and mapping
A wider discussion on how this fits in to our national campaigns
You can register your attendance at this event HERE and a reminder will issue in the days beforehand.

CATU Belfast have enjoyed a couple of really substantial member defence wins in recent days. Firstly, last Friday, members accompanied 83 year old Rosetta to the Housing Executive and refused to leave until they conducted essential maintenance/repairs that Rosetta had been waiting over 5 months for.
After speaking to a manager and acknowledging the branch’s letter of demands, they were told this essential work would be carried out first thing on Monday morning.
After visiting Rosetta on Tuesday morning, it was confirmed that this work has begun and Rosetta is over the moon with finally having these problems resolved.
That’s not enough slay for this branch, though! It was subsequently confirmed that a phone/email picket of Northern Property, in support of fellow member Petesy, had also resulted in a win. Northern Property have ceded to the demand that Petesy be allowed to remain in his home until after Christmas. This is the result of hundreds of emails and phone calls so well done to everyone who took part.

CATU Dublin South Inner City are planning for their first branch meeting which takes place next Wednesday, November 15th at 7pm in Ringsend & Irishtown Community Centre.
There will be discussion on future plans for the branch such as doorknocking and stalls, and deciding as members what direction to take in organising in the area. Along with this members will be chatting about the possibility of having a wee Christmas social 🎅
📍CATU South Inner City covers Dublin 2, Dublin 4 and parts of Portobello. If you’d like to be involved, drop the branch a message on [email protected] and make sure to follow their new Instagram page!

Lastly for this week, CATU Crumlin-Drimnagh’s next branch meeting is on Tuesday, November 21st at 7PM in the Bosco Youth Centre (Davitt Rd, Goldenbridge, Drimnagh, Dublin 12). It’s been a while since the branch has met up in person so this will be an important meeting to discuss how to organising into the future.
