CATU News - Week 19

A chairde,

This coming Saturday, May 11th, CATU’s National Committee will have an in-person edition of its monthly meeting, from 13:30 in Tailor's Hall, Dublin. (Directions HERE.) The meeting is open to all members to attend as observers and we would encourage those who are available to attend to do so. Our union is a democratic one and we would like to make the governance process as transparent as possible. We would especially encourage branches who don't currently have a national rep to send a member or two. We will endeavour to reimburse travel costs for anyone coming from outside Dublin. Please fill out the following form to confirm attendance:

CATU branches in Dublin’s South West Inner City have just reached out to local candidates running for election with a series of asks, with the aim of publicising candidates’ responses applicable to housing and community development - particularly in line with our 2 ongoing campaigns. The letter issued to candidates can be accessed below:

Local Elections ‘24 - CATU D8 Questions

The above can be adapted by other branches for their candidates.

We also are planning to catch sitting councillors at the last DCC meeting of the year, on Monday, May 13th, to ask them about their commitments to housing when re-running. We will be meeting at 5:45PM before the meeting to hand out our demands in person. Are other Dublin city centre branches interested in coming along? Please contact [email protected] so that numbers can be gauged.

Locally there is also an intention to attend hustings and arrange meetings where there are political party offices in the area to present our demands in person before the election. Please contact the above address if this is also of interest.

CATU Belfast will be meeting again this evening (Thursday) from 19:00 at Redeemer Central, 101 Donegall Street (just opposite the Kremlin).

If you’d like to suggest an item for discussion, add it to the branch chat or contact [email protected]

Next Tuesday, May 14th, the first session of a new Overholding Support Group will take place. The meeting will be held online and will allow members who have experienced, or are experiencing, the overholding process to come together and advise and support each other. It will start at 19:00 and the meeting link is below:

Meanwhile, on Thursday next week (16th), a training evening will be held in St. John Bosco Youth Centre in Dublin 12. The training will cover recruitment, member defence and action planning. It’s a great way for new members to become familiar with how we work, but also an opportunity for those with more experience to have a refresh.

The centre can be accessed by Luas - directions can be found HERE.

Lastly for this week, many of our members were out in force at May Day events across Ireland last week. Pictured below are members at the Cork, Dublin and Belfast rallies.
