CATU News - Week 11

A chairde,

As you will have seen earlier this week, CATU’s Trade Union forum is coming up on Sunday, March 24th from 11:30 to 15:00 in the Teachers’ Club in Dublin.

Registration is open via the form below:

The event will aim to discuss the recent Trade Union survey findings and develop a strategy with regard to Motion 18 which passed at last year’s Ard Fheis. The motion, proposed by the Crumlin-Drimnagh branch and amended by CATU Belfast, focuses on building relationships with Trade Unions operating on the island of Ireland.

Travel costs can be covered for those travelling outside Dublin - contact me if you’d like to make such arrangements. For any other queries regarding the event, contact [email protected]

It’s been another strong week of wins for our union right across the island. Following a successful phone and email picket, CATU Cork announced that the threat of eviction has now been withdrawn from a fellow member in Fermoy. In Belfast, two evictions were stopped in their tracks on Monday and Tuesday, with another successful housing clinic in amongst it. Our D7 West branch, with local community support, prevented an eviction on Hendrick Street and followed this up with a successful doorknocking session in the area, meeting several tenants in receipt of active eviction notices.

Looking for a great recruitment or fundraising opportunity for your branch? The Rent Strike, which documents the tenant movement in Ireland in the 70s will be available this summer for screenings across the island.

This 45min doc, made by CATU members, features archive footage and interviews with the activists who led the state's longest rent strike and biggest housing movement, the National Association of Tenants Organisations (NATO), and won all of their demands. There's further opportunities for Q&As or talks with producers to help flesh out events.

There are funds available to assist with these screenings where required. Submission deadline April 22nd. Further details and a form to register interest is below:

CATU Derry will be running a stall on Friday between Foyleside and the Richmond Centre at 1pm. If you’re nearby and would like to be involved, drop [email protected] a line.

Meanwhile, in Monaghan, local members will be meeting in Clones Technology Park at 7pm next Wednesday, March 20th.

CATU Tallaght are working away organising the Exchange Hall apartment block with a view to stopping an eviction of Tallaght Hospital nurses who work with young children and in the intensive care unit. There’s been good momentum locally with several new members joining - if you’d like to get involved contact [email protected]

CATU’s participation at last weekend’s Rupture Radical Bookfair was a big success - we had a full house for our discussion, which was led brilliantly by Jane and Jack, and our merch stand was very popular as well.

Relatedly, there’s one week left to order your Slumlords Out t-shirt/jumper. You can get yours HERE if you haven’t yet.
